Prevent Motorcycle Rust Year Round with VCI Technology

Motorcycles are more than just a means of transportation. They’re often a source of pride and joy for their owners. However, the elements can be more unforgiving than the road itself. Rust is at the top of the list of environmental threats to your ride. Not only does rust detract from the appearance of your bike, it can also compromise its performance and longevity. Fortunately, with the right precautions, you can prevent motorcycle rust and keep it running smoothly.

Keep Your Ride Clean & Dry

A clean motorcycle is less prone to rust. Dirt, grime, and road salt can trap moisture against the metal parts of your bike, which accelerates rust formation. Make it a habit to wash your bike. Use a motorcycle specific cleaner to remove dirt and grime. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the finish. A common tactic by professional detailers is to use two buckets for washing. One contains soapy water, the other is used to rinse the dirty sponge or brush. This ensures grit collected from the bike’s surface is not reapplied which can cause swirls and scratches in the paint or chrome finishes.

Once you have cleaned the motorcycle, dry it completely using a microfiber towel or chamois cloth. You can use a small leaf or shop blower to clear excess water and accelerate drying. Pay attention to areas where water might accumulate, such as under the fenders and in crevices.

Apply Protective Coatings

Coatings provide a barrier between the metal and moisture. Chemical scientists have dedicated a significant amount of time and expertise to studying the best way to inhibit corrosion and prevent rust on a wide range of metal materials. There’s no singular, one-size-fits-all solution for every material and situation. But Zerust products come close.

For painted surfaces, wax is the most well known protective barrier. It can last a long time, and helps keep rust at bay by keeping moisture, and corrosive road salt and grime from interacting with any bare metal. For uncoated parts, try a rust-preventative spray such as our Zerust® Axxanol™ Spray-G. These sprays contain rust inhibitors and create a protective film.

Check and Maintain the Chain

The chain is a common area where rust can develop, particularly if it’s not properly maintained. Regular cleaning and lubrication as needed is key to keeping the chain rust-free and moving freely. Clean the chain regularly to remove dirt and grime that can trap moisture. Use a chain cleaner designed for motorcycles and follow up with a high-quality chain lubricant to keep the chain well-oiled and rust free.

Store Your Bike Properly

Where and how you store your motorcycle can greatly impact its susceptibility to rust. It is preferable to store motorcycles in a dry, secure location when not being used, such as a garage or shed. Avoid leaving your bike outside where it’s exposed to the elements.

If you must store your bike outside, use a breathable motorcycle cover. This protects it from rain and snow while allowing moisture to escape, preventing it from getting trapped. The best choice in covers to protect your valuable motorcycle is our Zerust Motorcycle Cover with patented anti-corrosion technology built into the zip-up enclosure. In addition to the rust protection benefits, it also protects your motorcycle from harmful UV rays that cause damage to plastic, vinyl, rubber, and metal components. If you have spare parts or accessories that are not installed on the bike, consider our other rust prevention products such as Rust Protection Vapor Capsules for small parts, Zerust Plastabs® for parts that are stored in a cabinet or toolbox, and our Multipurpose VCI Poly Bags which come in variety of sizes to protect your metal parts and accessories from rust.

Inspect and Address Problem Areas

Regularly inspect your motorcycle for signs of rust or corrosion. Check for small patches of rust or corrosion on metal parts. Addressing these early can prevent more serious damage.  If you find rust, remove it promptly using a rust remover or sandpaper. After removing the rust, protect the surface with a coating such as touch up paint, wax or a spray lubricant.

Protect Electrical Components

Electrical components are also vulnerable to rust, which can cause operational issues. Protect them by using dielectric grease on electrical connectors to prevent moisture from causing corrosion. Ensure all electrical connections are sealed properly and are not exposed to moisture.

Regular Maintenance

Adhering to a regular maintenance schedule is crucial. During maintenance, ensure there are no leaks in the fuel system or engine that could lead to rust. Ensure seals and gaskets are in good condition to prevent moisture from getting into areas where it shouldn’t be.

Conclusion

Rust is an insidious enemy. But with regular care and the right preventive measures, you can keep your motorcycle looking great and performing at its best. Keeping on a schedule of routine cleaning, protective coatings, proper storage, and maintenance are your best defenses against rust. By taking these steps, you’ll not only prolong the life of your bike but also maintain its value and appearance. Keep riding, and keep rust at bay!
